v2.6 Submitted

July 2nd, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

Version 2.6 has been submitted. This will fix any of you that upgraded to v2.5 from v2.0 and found that your images were lost. They weren’t actually lost but the pointer to them was changed and they were pointing to a location that didn’t exist. This update resolves that and moves the old files to the new place.

So if you lost your images in the upgrade, either replace them or hang tight for this version to be approved.

Do NOT upgrade to PosePad v2.5

July 1st, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

Do NOT upgrade to PosePad v2.5 if you have used v2.0. There is a bug that will lose the pointer to your images. The thumbnails will still be there but the images will vanish from full screen mode. They still exists in the path (I think) so it’s just a matter of pointing to the right path in the code. I should have a fix by tomorrow and will submit it to Apple for review. In the meantime I have pulled it from Sale in the app store.

I apologize for the inconvenience. I had tested this before but had lost my backups of the running v2.0 and couldn’t thoroughly test the upgrade process.

Delays and Rejections

June 23rd, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

I’ve had a few people ask me when the next version was coming out. I’ve had a few issues getting the latest version through the Apple approval process. After 7 days, Apple finally reviewed my submission and rejected it. The rejection was justified, the in-app store just didn’t work. I had made some changes on the server side after the binary was submitted and didn’t realize it broke the binary.

After a quick fix and a resubmittal the same day, I had to wait another 7 days for them to review the app. This time the app was rejected again but I forget for what reason but I remember it was justified as well and I was a bit embarrassed.

I submitted a fix again and had to wait another 7 days. 7 days seems to be the amount of time it takes Apple to wade through all of their numerous submissions and finally get to yours. Especially with the looming iOS4 release, I’m sure they have had a huge flux of new app submissions and iPad releases probably aren’t as high on their priority list. This time, I’m told that my app is rejected because it contains images which look like polaroid pictures and that they have had issues in the past with Polaroid contacting them about infringement. I feel Polaroid is being a bit neurotic about a product they barely even sell now but I can respect Apple’s desires to not get involved. I just wish they would have brought this up in submission 1 or 2 (the feature has been there through each of those submissions). Additionally, they rejected the app because a UIPicker spanned the entire width of the screen, which is a No No according to the Apple Human Interface Guidelines. A valid reason again but also something they should have caught in submissions 1 or 2 and I could have had fixed before the third submission.

I have submitted another binary for their review, I fully expect this to take another 7 days before they get to review it and hopefully then it will be approved. I will keep you apprised of the progress.

Thanks for your support.

v2.5 Submitted For Approval

May 28th, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

The next release of PosePad has been submitted for approval.  There are quite a few fixes and some new features in this release.  I’ve listed them below.  Two things that I want to make special mention of.  The Pose Store is introduced in this release.  I will be selling packs of poses for you to download.  I will continue to offer the free samples to download as well.  If you are interested in putting together a book of poses for sale, feel free to contact me shawn{at}posepad{.}com and we can discuss it.

Posebook Store

The other features is the ability to draw lighting diagrams in PosePad.  Click the pencil icon in the top right of the pose details view and the page will flip to a very basic studio setup.  Here I have included very basic drawing capabilities to make a rough sketch of your lighting setup if you choose.

Draw Lighting Diagrams

New Features and Fixes:

  • Introduction of pose store where you can pose packs (none available just yet)
  • Free sample poses are now found under pose store “Get Free Samples” button
  • You can now draw lighting diagrams for your poses
  • Settings button where you can choose to sort your poses manually or alphabetically
  • Label explaining how to pinch to expand the pose full screen (turn this off on the settings screen)
  • Info button with lots of useful links
  • You can now have poses with the same name and the images won’t overwrite each other
  • Fixed a scrolling bug on the thumbnail view
  • Ability to delete Default PoseBook
  • Automatically finds poses that have been orphaned and puts them in an orphaned pose book

Have a suggestion or a request for the next version?  Feel free to submit a request, I’m very open to your suggestions and may even reward you for submitting a good idea or finding bugs.

Thanks again everyone.

What do you want to see in the next version?

May 21st, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

What would you like to see in the next version of PosePad? Submit your feature requests on the requests page.

Some of the requests I’ve received and will be working on:

  • Have the option to sort poses alphabetically in addition to manual sort
  • PoseStore where you can purchase books of poses (don’t worry, free samples will still be available).
  • in-App Feedback button

What else would you like to see? I’d love to hear from you about what I can do to make your investment in PosePad more valuable.

Review by Scott Baldwin Photography

May 20th, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

I just wanted to share this review by Scott Baldwin of Scott Baldwin Photography:

“I agree with the other reviews regarding using to take notes on lighting and other details. I have found two other uses for this app: I have examples of each of our products we sell including custom montages, different effects we can apply, samples of calendars, save the date, etc.. In the text area I added a little explanation of each of those products along with the cost. I then hand the iPad to the client and they can look through our different products and effects we can apply to the pictures from their sessions. We normally do our portrait sales sessions using a program called ProSelect and use a large 52inch TV. When on location I can upload the pictures to the iPhone and then use this program to add notes to each picture based on customer feedback–such as “order 2 8x10s crop in a little, apply sepia to one of them”. This program is much more than just a posing guide and because of that well worth the $5 cost. Also, at the time of this review, I think this is the only app that will allow you to add notes to pictures.”

Sincerely,
Scott Baldwin

PosePad v2.0 is Pending Approval

April 23rd, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

PosePad v2.0 has been submitted for approval.

In this new version, you can now organize your poses into books.  So you could have a book for newborn poses, a book for senior poses, etc.

I also introduced a thumbnail view of your poses so that you can easily see what is on your pose book.

And finally, you can now download sample pose books and poses from the PosePad server.  These are only meant as samples right now to show you what can be done in PosePad.  The premise of PosePad is still to organize your own shots and ideas but feel free to incorporate these samples into your workflow if you like them.

The next version of PosePad will feature more complete pose books that you can download.  Some will be free and some will be available for in-app purchasing.

Here are some new screen shots:

v1.2 is approved and available

April 12th, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

Version 1.2 has been approved and is now available for download. It features large improvements in stability and performance. In the underbelly, I moved from storing the images and poses in a flat file to a more stable method of using CoreData and a database.

I’m now looking for testers and reviewers. If you are a blogger and a photographer, I would love to send you a code to get a free copy in exchange for your feedback on the app. I have some ideas for future versions but I’d love to get some feedback on it.

If you are interested, send an email to shawn@posepad.com with:

  • Review” in the subject.
  • Please include a brief (sentence or two) of your photography bio (I’m just looking for what kind of work you do: children, fashion, commercial, etc).
  • And then please include a link to your blog so I can follow you.

v1.2 is Pending Approval

April 9th, 2010
by Shawn Grimes

Version 1.2 has been submitted for approval. I have converted it from using a flat file to store the data and poses to using the CoreData functions and a sqlite database. No worries though as your stored poses should convert over to the new format.

Additionally, there are major stability and performance improvements in this version. The animations will be quicker and the memory leak that was causing it to crash has been fixed.

I’ve been working hard on it and long into the night since I picked up my iPad on Saturday.

One note, when swiping to move through poses on the pose details screen, you need to swipe where the image is. Don’t try swiping over one of the text boxes (even if the image is in full screen mode, you need to swipe where the main image view is). Sorry, this just wasn’t something I could fix in this release. The release of this version was stability and performance.
